Spoonfuls of Wisdom - Blog/Longevity/What My Grandchild Taught Me About Getting Old While Feeling Young

What my granddaughter taught me about getting older
(and why the senior discount might have to wait)

The other day, I got turned down for a senior discount.
The cashier glanced at me, and shook her head.

“What?! You look too young,” she said.

I should have felt flattered. Instead, I just felt... amused. Because earlier that week, a stranger assumed I was my granddaughter’s mom. (That would cut 30 years off my age!)

And then came the moment of truth.

A 3-year-old's test for being "Old":

My 3-year-old granddaughter looked at my husband thoughtfully and said:
"You're old, Grandpa. The veins on your hand are raised, and they move around when I touch them."

"Is Grandma old?" my husband asked.

“Nope,” she said.
But then she looked at my hands. "Oh, Grandma is old, too."

And you know what? She’s kind of right.
Because of how my veins look.
But I definitely don't feel old. Or act it.

Now, I’m not here to win a beauty contest, or argue with a 3-year-old. But moments like this remind me how strange and subjective “aging” really is.

Aging isn’t just wrinkles or veins or gray hair.
Instead, it’s what kind of energy you bring to the day.

Can you chase grandkids around the yard?
Do you feel strong climbing the stairs?
Do you laugh easily? Sleep well? Think clearly?

To me, that’s youth.
And it’s worth protecting.

I don’t train to impress the mirror.
I train so I can carry my own groceries.
So I can squat down to tie a shoe.
So I can dance at weddings -- without a chair break.

Aging well. It isn’t just outer appearances -- those wrinkles tell a life story.
Aging well. For me, it's freedom, clarity, and joy.

So yes, my veins are doing the dance.
But so is my spirit.

And I’ll take that over a senior discount any day!
